Comunidade Vida e Paz – Sessão à turma 11º 3J em outubro de 2022

Sem abrigo, duas histórias de superação
Homeless, two stories of success

I really enjoyed the presentation that “Comunidade Vida e Paz” shared with us in October. I had so many mixed feelings... it made me realise that we cannot think “this (being homeless due to drug addiction or alcoholism) will never happen to me”, because at some point in our life, we all thought like that and clearly life sometimes tricks us.

When Victor and José shared their lives with us, I thought “what if something like this happened to me? Would I have the same courage to share the experience to 30/40 people?) The answer is probably not, I already get nervous when I have oral presentations, so I felt like a coward, but it also gave some type of courage! It wasn’t easy for them to share their stories. I really admire that they did so.

The first of them made me think: "What would I do without my mom? She is important in my life and in the life of every kid that has a mom (or at least that has a good mom). Then I also liked the part when the first man said that he went against every rule because he fell in love while in recovery… For some people, it may be a cliché but for me - and I love a good romance - I thought it was cute, and especially after his bad experiences in the streets.

The second man made me perceive that drugs and alcohol are bad; everyone tells us this in school, we are constantly warned about their dangers, but when we get to teens, people tell you to try everything now, because one day it will be too late. I agree, but if we start getting addicted to drugs and alcohol, maybe one day it will also be too late for us, just as it was for José and Victor.

I’m one of those who overthinks a lot and I remember telling my parents “If one day I get addicted to drugs or alcohol, please hit me” . When these two men from Comunidade Vida e Paz were talking, we could see that they were brave. They recovered, unlike many others, as it is tremendously difficult to overcome situations of addiction. Anyway, they warned all of us by stating they had lost everything. Gaining their dignity back was only possible because of their will power and the support of Comunidade Vida e Paz.

For me it was great to be part of this presentation and it made me think a lot of how sometimes life doesn’t go as we plan.
